Some cities are not full of typical tourist attractions, but are gorgeous and worth visiting for other reasons. Specifically, I’ve found some cities ideal for simply walking around, seeing what there is to see, and soaking up culture. There might be one or two spots worth a visit, but primarily, it’s about enjoying just being where you are. Essentially, this is the art of flaneurs, the art of strolling. Flaneur is a French word, one which I think perfectly captures a method of delighting in travel; it emphasizes strolling around, noticing little details, and focusing on where you are and your surroundings. While strolling can be practiced anywhere, a few cities I’ve visited are especially great for embracing the art of flaneurs: Dubrovnik, Kotor, Tirana, Stavanger, Brasov, and Bratislava.
1. Dubrovnik, Croatia
The southern tip of croatia hosts this gem. Old Town, Game of Thrones castles, coastal walks, rocky beaches, and clear teal-blue-green water delight the eyes as you stroll around the city.
2. Kotor, Montenegro
A few hours from Dubrovnik, crystal clear waters gently lap against the base of mountains in the Bay of Kotor. The Old Town is full of medieval churches, clock towers, and sweet smelling bakeries. The pier lights up a night, reflecting lights in the water.
3. Tirana, Albania
A low-key yet somehow bustling city, Tirana is vibrantly colorful. Public benches and trash cans are painted in alternating different colors. Flowers hang in baskets at street corners, and green spaces abound. Banana stands run rampant and winding markets hold a host of treasures.
4. Stavanger, Norway
Fjords and large swords. That is all. But it’s everything.
5. Brasov, Romania
Brasov holds the title of the prettiest medieval city I have ever seen. I just completed an intensive course on the history of medieval London, so I feel at least somewhat qualified in making this claim. Admire the incredible architecture, color, flora, and general beauty of the city. Not to mention, Bran Castle, Dracula’s home, nearby!
6. Bratislava, Slovakia
The Blue Church, the incredible view of the Danube from Hrad Castle, and bronze statue installations in the street. Bonus, lots of medieval features throughout the city. It’s bright, colorful, and lovely.
I’ve kept it light on text here, in hopes that the photos speak for themselves. Hope you’ve enjoyed!
